Top Five Reasons to Hire a Personal Concierge

Top Five Reasons to Hire a Personal Concierge. Once you begin to utilize a Personal Concierge you will find many more reasons to continue working with one:

1. Focus on what's important and the business of making money.
Having a Personal Concierge allows you the freedom to focus on your company, business, career and family, not the mundane tasks that are inherent in business and everyday life.

2. Saves you money.
Cut down on impulse purchases. We only purchase those items that are on your list, at your request.

Because we are independent contractors their is no need for you to spend revenue on employee benefits, payroll taxes or insurance either.

3. Freedom to pursue pleasurable activities. Our Personal Concierge works with you to free up your time to pursue the activities that help keep you productive in your career. We also assist busy overwhelmed parents to get chores done and errands completed.

Don't spend all your free time on errands and work when you really want to spend that quality time with your family and friends. Hand us your To-Do list and consider it done.

4. One-stop shopping.A Personal Concierge can perform personal needs like shopping, run errands and assist around the house. We also work well for business needs like; word processing, creating marketing tools such as brochures, flyers and business cards, dinning & travel arrangements, maintaining databases and sending out mailings, etc.
There is no duty that a Personal Concierge can't perform or wouldn't be willing to learn.

5. Tailored to fit your needs.Your Personal Concierge is set up to fit your individual needs. Fees are arranged for one-time hourly tasks or for lengthy weekly retainers. With our Personal Concierge you create your own individual working partnership.

This list highlights the practical reasons for relying on the skills of a Personal Concierge.

Raising prices can bring desired results

Old Dominion Concierge, LLC is up and running and clients are streaming in!  The plan is to grow our client list with working professionals and busy moms living in the Loudoun County community.

But, there are some clients that you may want to stare clear of.

Granted filling the hours on the daily schedule is critical, but keep in mind not everyone will be able to afford your services.  No matter how much they want to be an individual that hires a personal concierge they will have a hard time justifying the cost.  In the end these folks are more trouble to deal with and will require extra attention, this will take valuable time away from your truly desireable clients.

So, pricing is key to aquiring and retaining your desired client base.
Sure, some customers will complain, and others might take their business elsewhere. But there’s a good chance you don’t want those kinds of customers, anyway. say Jason Fried author Inc. Magazine.

Go Ahead, Raise Your Business’s Prices  written by James Fried and published in Inc. Magazine talks about the importance of product pricing and being bold and brave enough to reach for the higher price.

Holiday Gift Wrapping Can Be Fun

Holiday gift wrapping can be a fun and sometimes relaxing part of the gift giving season.

Some folks wrap as they shop, they either make use of the department store wrap station which is an option, but every other shopper that uses thier service will have packeages that look just like yours.  Or some manage the task in their own home wrapping stations.

I know I like to set aside an evening or two after the tree has been decorated and the Christmas cookies have been baked. On such an evening I make a batch of my favorite warm winter cocktail, grab a plateful of fresh cookies and insure the kiddies are tucked warmly in their beds. Then the living room floor or kitchen table becomes my wrapping studio.

I find that when I plan these days into an already hectic schedule my creativity has a chance to blossom.

Decoupaging shoe boxes, stencilling papers and gluing glitter here and tying ribbons there is so much fun, especially when listening to Johnny, Bing and Nat. Bows, bells and homemade gift tags are my favorite items to create to adorn my gifts.

Now, I realize not everyone has the time or desire to wrap presents. Gift bags may be the extent of your gift wrapping skills, no worries check out this video for some inspiration Gift Wrapping With Magazine Paper: Gift Wrapping Ideas eHow.com. Bet, you never knew you could wrap gift with Saran wrap or use pixie stix to dress up a kids gift. What is your most creative gift wrapping idea?

In the end it's the thought that counts and besides, if you need help you can always give me a call and put my services to work for you. There is still time to take advantage of our holiday shoppers and gift wrappers.

Thanksgiving Dinner Remains Affordable For Most

The Virginia Farm Bureau says turkey and all the trimmings won't cost much more this Thanksgiving than it did a year ago.

The bureau says it should cost $43.39 to serve turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, cranberries and peas to 10 adults. The price also includes a tray of carrots and celery, as well as pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Officials say a survey of grocery stores indicate all that food will cost 1 cent more this year, on average.

Of course, where you get your food makes a difference. The bureau says the highest average cost was in Pound in Wise County, where dinner for 10 would cost $52.36. Bristol has the cheapest eats at $33.18.

Well that's good news to be thankful for!

There are neighbors in our community however that may not be able to afford even that.  Listed below are some resources that may be helpful.  If you know someone that can use these services please direct them accordiningly or better yet invite them to your home for dinner.

Blue Ridge Mountains Are Ablaze with Fall Color

A fall color palette reminiscent of Spring.

I was fortunate to have some free time on Saturday! That however can be a double edge sword when you're a small business owner.   But, no worries.

The drive from the Northern Virginia rural town of Leesburg to Shenandoah National Park was more scenic then I could have imagined.  The entire country side is sprinkled with working farms, and fresh produce and dairy stands.

Our trek along Skyline Drive was a pure thrill as our drive brought us to altitudes over 3,000 feet.  Banked hills flank both sides of the road at times, each vying for the attention of photographers as they showed off their golden autumn glory.  Shale stone walls played host to some smaller plants and tree saplings as well.  As our drive climbed ever closer to the apex of this section of the Blue Ridge Mountains there were times when nothing flanked either side of the car except the great expanse of the valley below.

Up, Up we went, every now and then we'd pass a cyclist or two either heading uphill with every mighty effort they had or coasting downhill at amazing speeds.

There were plenty of scenic overlooks and opportunities to get out of the car and look down into Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.  The valley floor is sprinkled with building both large and obtrusive or small and inconspicuous.  As I took in the view I thought, someone somewhere has a personal photo of the unspoiled valley of days past.

Now, although it is the Fall Season and we had hoped to see the bright red, pinks and oranges of full Fall Foliage, they just had not arrived yet.  In fact there were some canopied areas that if one were mistaken would have thought it was Spring all over again.  It was a shocking contrast from the wooded areas just  a few yards away and across the street.  This stand of trees soared to at least 100 feet in height, if not taller, and had no lower branches.  My sister named it "The Stilted Grove".  Quite the fitting title.  What do you think?

Our descent was just at thrilling, it was obviously all downhill from there.  Looking out for sightseeing drivers on their own ascent to the beauty that awaited them was the most nerve wracking part.  On several occasions the yellow center line was crossed, horns were honked,  and angry glares and stares were shared.  But, we all made it home  no worse for the wear.  Thank the Lord for that!

Phew, so my recommendation for a trip such as this is to either hire a driver or go with someone who has no desire to admire the scenic views.

The Holidays-It's All Up To You Mom!

Whether we want to think about it already or not, it is right around the corner.   IT being Christmas and all the wonder and joy we look forward to.  The caroling and family gatherings!  School plays and church services.

But we can also expect long hours at work and the hustling and bustling long shopping lines and traffic jams.  And the entire family counts on one singular person to make it all happen, all with an appearance of effortless glee.  MOM!

The average mother spends approximately 13 full days preparing for Christmas that's about 312 hours or more. And after all that the average Christmas dinner lasts little more than two hours.

So it is perhaps not surprising that 20% of woman says they hate the holiday season. This is according to a survey  conducted by Kaleidascope a few years ago of 3,000 women.

The survey determined that we spend 288 hours shopping, 4 hours wrapping gifts, 9 hours decorating the house, 4 hours preparing the main Christmas meal and 4.5hours cooking it.  and in the end the meal only ends up lasting 2 hours.

A third of the women  surveyed carve the turkey, and once dinner is finished they spend and additional 11 hours cleaning up and putting the home back in order.

Unsurprisingly, 65% of women say they find the festive period stressful.  But, 70% of mothers say all the trouble taken preparing for Christmas is worth their while.

Just under 30% of us start planning for Christmas in September to get all the work done.  And an efficient 46% begin to prepare for the following year in the January.

This is definitely one of those times when a Personal Concierge/Errand Service can help minimize the stress that inevitably comes with the holidays.  There is no point in doing it ALL yourself.  A personal assistant allows you to enjoy the spirit of the holidays, spend time with family and friends and create memories that consist of more than being stuck in traffic, or in line at the department or grocery store.

Personal Shoppers are no longer just for fashion shopping, we grocery shop, purchase and wrap gifts as well as take care of postal chores and a lot more.

Fall Fun in Virginia's Loudoun County

Apple picking at Crooked Run Orchard: the experience was free and the apples were only $1.00/lb, .50 if you picked them up off the ground.

I was on the virge of plucking one from the ground just under the tree that was perfectly ripe and shaped like a dream, but to my dismay my sister stopped me.  She said "One should never eat apples that have fallen on the ground!" This caused me to immediately drop what appeared to me to be the most perfect apple, ever.

This got me to wondering!  Is it a fact that apples that have fallen on their own should be left on the ground to rot.  Or, is it merely an old wives tale?

We didn't ask the farmer/cashier when we checked out.  The old biddy was rather rude, which hastened our departure.  All she complained about was how all these people were in line and the line kept getting longer.  Umm! Call me silly, but should she be complainng about business when business is good?  Anyhoo!

But, thanks to Google I was able to uncover the mystery, if you can call it that.

From a website called MissouriFamilies.org I found this statement:
Do not can "windfall apples" (fruit that has blown off the tree) because they are much more likely to contain mold spores, which can result in spoilage of the canned products.

There you have it folks, picking apples from the ground is in fact a no-no.  Besides it is so much more fun to get in and among the branches and reach up as far as you possibly can to grab the apple you spied from below.

Now, we need to make some pies, fritter, cider and sauce.  Fall is such a yummy time of the year.

What's in a name?

I often get asked.  Why did you name your company Old Dominion Concierge, LLC?  What is Old Dominion?

My response is quite simple really; I didn’t want a name that was too cutesy or tepid.  The company name had to be a name that announced the location in which we do business and had to be easy for all to remember and refer to.  And both genders had to be comfortable with using the name when telling their friends about us.  Plus, the name had to have a professional appearance and ring to it.

Old Dominion is the nickname for the Common Wealth of Virginia because Charles II. allowed it to call itself the fourth dominion of his empire, that is, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Virginia. The name is in honor of Queen Elizabeth, of England.

That’s it plain and simple!  I suppose we could have gone with Virginia Concierge, but where’s the fun in that?

What is your State's nickname?

How To Prepare for a Severe Thunderstorm

In the NOVA area we had a major thunderstorm roll through with little to no warning.  This storm caused chaos at the local elementary schools as parents/guardians scrambled to get there walking students home safely and as dry as possible.  Fortunately, Old Dominion Concierge, LLC was able to help out by organizing rides and locating alternate drivers throughout the school year.

Are your kids prepared for the next thunderstorm?  Review theses tips below with your kids to ensure they are knowledgeable on what to do in the event they are stuck out doors or home alone.

What to Tell Children

The sound of thunder can be especially frightening for young children. Take the "scariness" away by teaching them what to expect during a thunderstorm and how to be safe.

  • If you see or hear a thunderstorm coming, go inside a sturdy building or car. Sturdy buildings are the safest place to be. If no building is nearby, a hard-top vehicle will offer some protection. Keep car windows closed and avoid convertibles. Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

  • If you can't get inside, or if you feel your hair stand on end, which means lightning is about to strike, hurry to a low, open space immediately. Crouch down on the balls of your feet, place your hands on your knees and lower your head. Make yourself the smallest target possible and minimize contact with the ground.

  • Practice the "crouch down" position. Show children how to practice squatting low to the ground to be the smallest target possible for lightning in case they get caught outside in a thunderstorm. Show them how to place their hands on their knees and lower their head, crouching on the balls of their feet.

  • Stay away from tall things like trees, towers, fences, telephone lines, or power lines. They attract lightning. Never stand underneath a single large tree out in the open, because lightning usually strikes the highest point in an area.

  • Stay away from metal things that lightning may strike, such as umbrellas, baseball bats, fishing rods, camping equipment, and bicycles. Lightning is attracted to metal and poles or rods.

  • If you are boating or swimming, get to land immediately. Stay away from rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water and get off the beach. The saturated sand conducts electricity very well. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity. When lightning strikes nearby, the electrical charge can travel through the water. Each year people are killed by nearby lightning strikes while in or on the water or on the beach.

  • Turn off the air conditioner and television, and stay off the phone until the storm is over. Lightning can cause electric appliances, including televisions and telephones, to become dangerous during a thunderstorm.

  • Stay away from running water inside the house; avoid washing your hands or taking a bath or shower. Electricity from lightning has been known to come inside through plumbing.

  • Battery powered lighting devises should be used so check your supply of batteries and light bulbs now, don't wait for the next storm.

  • The use of candles should be kept to a minimum and only be lit in rooms that are occupied by an adult.  Do not light candles in bedrooms or in areas exposed to high traffic or left unattended.

Are you prepared for the next storm?  We can help by reviewing your safety kits and assisting you in getting stocked up for the next storm.  Please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Take Time to Smell The Roses

Isn't that a proverb quote we all should strive to accomplish?  With the topsy-turvy high speed lifestyles we lead there's barely time to see the rose, let alone stop to smell it.

But, fear not. With a few time saving tips and the help of your local concierge you'll find the time to stop, smell and enjoy the roses in your life.

Wouldn't it be nice to have time to not only spend time with your family, but do it without that nagging worried feeling that you should be doing something?

Use an Online Calender.

Using online calendars to manage your time is a very effective method for life organization. Using online calendars, such as Google calendar, can connect your family and friends to one calendar. All of your contacts can add to one central calendar, and display their plans for everyone else to view. Everyone who is using the online calendar can keep and organize the events they have planned, which simplifies life organization greatly.

Set up an online calendar, and convince your relatives and friends to subscribe to your calendar. Once they are consistent in posting their events, it becomes much easier to plan your own events with them so that scheduling conflicts are eliminated.

This tip is simple and easy to implement.  With kids scheduling their own sports and social engagements, an online calender will keep you all involved and in the right place at the right time.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help setting up an Online Calender or if you need assistants with organizing your home and errands.

A new adventure...How exciting!

When I first got laid-off in February this year (2010) I never imagined I would be out of work this long.  It is going one nearly eight months.  Eight months of job searching, resume critiquing and interview after interview and still, NOTHING!

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.  If the economy won't make a change then I will.  If there are no jobs to be found, then I'll make my own!

I've always admired those that have the fortitude to branch out and walk the tight rope of self employment.  Plus, I do have an entrepreneurial spirit that I would like to set free and see what comes of it.

Welcome to Old Dominion Concierge, LLC the blog.   I'm not completely sure what I will post here, or how often I will make updates.  But, I will do my very best to post articles and content that is of value to my readers.  After all I don't want to waste the valuable time that I am going to save you in the long run.

Please feel free to leave comments and take part in the conversation.  Let me know what you would like to read about, or if there is a service you would like to see added to our very extensive list of concierge services.
